
2007—2009: Extraordinary Service Program (ESP)
The women of Psi Kappa Omega Chapter planned, participated and partnered on several activities to address the ESP platforms, including: Albion Festival of the Forks, Southwest MI Diabetes Walk, AKA Leadership Retreat, Albion Kwanzaa Celebration and the Boys and Girls Club Christmas Family Open House. From January to March 2008, the chapter presented Battle Creek’s first Economic Smart Fair at Washington Heights Community Ministries, conducted six sessions of the “Earn Save Prosper” Kids Club at Kellogg Community College in partnership with the Legacy scholars, and contributed to the Comerica Bank and Generation E Institute. In April 2008, a donation was made to the Legacy Scholars Endowment Fund in recognition of the 2008 ESP Kids Club.
2010-2014 Emerging Young Leaders
Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) Initiatives
Seventeen young ladies participated in EYL representing both Albion and Battle Creek, MI. Group activities included monthly meetings, a field trip to Ohio Black History Museum (Cinncinnati, OH), and the Albion College Black History Event. They also participated in the chapter’s STEM conference, a We Love Science workshop at Albion College, the Juneteenth Parade, the Back to School-Stay in School Bash, The Albion NAACP Banquet, and the Albion Festival of the Forks.
2014—2018 Launching New Dimensions of Service
ASECEND:
The Psi Kappa Omega Chapter ASCEND group consists of eighteen students: thirteen young ladies and 5 young men. This group participates in Model United Nations, the year Big Read event in partnership with Albion College, college readiness seminars, STEM related career exposure, and many other great learning opportunities.
Health Promotion:
“Pink Goes Red” -Members turned their pink into red for a week; shared health information, recipes and exercises with family, friends, and churches February 2015. Psi Kappa Omega actively participates in this event every year.
The World’s Longest Day Alzheimer’s Event – (2016) Psi Kappa Omega partnered with Washington Heights UM Church for this event. The event included Alzheimer’s information, a line dance class, and fund raising for the Alzheimer’s Association. (2017) This year a presentation was provided by Ms. Cammi Robinson, Program Coordinator of the Michigan Alzheimers’ Association. The program’s presentation was entitled “The Caregiver Staying Strong: Identify Stress, Reduce Stress, and Be Prepared”
Family Strengthening:
MLK Day of Service: (2016) The Chapter partnered with God’s Kitchen for this day of service. Over 200 people were served dinner. A short program was presented to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The chapter also distributed warm winter items. (2017) The chapter presented a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Soul Food Lunch. A soul food lunch was served and cold weather items were distributed. 194 people were served at this event which took place at Washington Heights United Methodist Church.
(2017) United Way Diaper Drive: The Chapter donated 1,560 diapers and 88 wipes to the Battle Creek United Way Diaper Drive. The United Way Diaper Drive took place June 16th through 20th, followed by a June 21 Day of Action volunteer event. The Diapers were sorted, repackaged and delivered to more than 45 agencies across Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties.
Environmental Ownership:
Psi Kappa Omega sponsored and organized the first in a series of community build projects to build preschool playgrounds in Battle Creek Public Schools. On November 1st, two preschool playgrounds were built at Ann J. Kellogg and Fremont Elementary Schools under the able leadership of Cortaa Robinson and playground committee chair Chandra Youngblood. (2017) The chapter plans to paint and resurface sandboxes on these playgrounds.
Community Collaboration/Projects:
The Chapter partners with the Albion Chapter of the NAACP to provide school supplies and backpacks at Back to School Stay in School Celebration. The event takes place in late August before the start of the school year.
